Fandom platform of the future walkthrough
going through this in the eyes of a bobaboard user to see how it compares. any typos are my own because i suck at spelling
Account Management
- Accounts not tied to user's RL identity : nonissue at the moment since it's invite only, when it gets federated, this might be more of an issue but that would be out of bobaboard's hands. the big issue here is to figure out identity management (which is on the docket to be worked on. no need to juggle a dozen identities when it's built in with the option to turn it off in certain boards/threads, which deals with most issues with RP accounts unless you play multiple characters i guess?)
- a “display name” separate from an “@ name” : again somewhat of a nonissue since identities are by per board basis. we're juggling a lot of issues with “verification” of identites that can be used on multiple boards. @'ing people within a thread is on the docket and from my understanding so is the ability to @ other people who may or may not be on the board? this solves issues with emoji display name accessibility, etc. there are thougths of bringing in the flair like ability from reddit
- a “pronouns” field : nonissue with anon based identities
- bio/description/profile per account/pseud : again, nonissue with boba anon first ability
- “username history” : antithetical to the idea and concept behind bobaboard
- option for multiple accounts and easy switching : not an option but most times there's no reason to have multiple accts on boba. the closest boba would have will be deanon/post as “character” which is going to be on per board basis. how to onload “characters” / identities is something up in the air but from my understanding the ability to switch between isn't actually hard
- reply, like, send messages as any of your blog identities : nonissue again since anon-first. this does bring into question if one can make some comments within the same thread deanon / as a certain identity and other comments as thread assigned ID
- consider the option of having a single central identity : this is kinda your actual username. more important when the option to create your own “personal” boards pops up
- openid or similar for cross-platform commenting : antithetical to how boba views anon posting, you can cross post via just... posting your own shit?
- age requirements or restrictions : boba itself is 18+. i'm not sure how it would make sure future federation members will remain 18+ or if that's a nonissue?
- stable links : boba kinda has this except the links kinda really sucks
user interface & accessibility
- built in accessibility from the ground up : we're in alpha still. we're talking a lot about accessibility and it's stuff we want but it's not there yet. from my understanding, videos don't autoplay but gifs do. we don't have alt text options yet
- ability to toggle some kind of “plain” skin : we dont have skins yet. this is a good point to make sure stuff is readable to anyone
- ability to switch between infinite scroll/pagination : we've talked about it! i don't remember what the final decision was but i'm p sure it was “we'll get a toggle at some point”?
- some way to ping/@ other users and have them notified : this is on the docket
- native mobile/responsive interface from launch : we got this for the most part. still having some issues but currently nothing that makes it impossible to use on mobile. i'm not sure if we've tested in all browsers
- paid ability to skin the site : not sure how the view is for that. from the doc, the idea is maybe have a few basic skins and allowing additional/custom skins be premium? there was a talk about differentiating between skins/themes. themes are a bit of a non issue unless we want users to be able to make their threads look different (which tbh would be kinda interesting a la gaiaonline having different post types)
- ability to change view to hide all images/videos/resize images/etc : not something we have right now.
- activity feed showing likes/reblogs/etc, with toggle to incldue all acitivty or just activity with additions : no need for multiple feeds for sideblogs since again, non issue. currently we don't have it but it looks like it might be part of the next update?
- ability to view archives/posts by date : do not have
- flags for things like jump scares and strobes : we have our tag system which is very much a “tags are nice but not required”. some of the comments consider the idea of an “opt in to see post” option where only the tags are visible and you click to view the whole thing. there's also talks of having certain tags be required (a la Ao3's required tags) but we've p much said “nope” to that and that tags are nice and not a requirement for any posts. another idea is to have posts to be tagged fiction/nonfiction/visual triggers. tbh, visual triggers (i.e. strobe lights, flashing gifs, etc) probably isn't a bad idea but again, not as a required tag
- ability to disable emoji for people who use screen readers : we don't have built in emojis but it's probs not a bad idea.
Content Presentation
- chronological timeline / content displayed in reverse chronolgoical order : boba is lowkey forum system so it's kind of LIFO – the thing most recently bumped is at the top. at this part they talk about how broken tumblr search is; that's something boba is working on rn. pinning threads to your own list would help i think
- ability to host images, audio, video : currently boba hosts images and allows a shit ton of embedding options.
- ability to post images w/ an invidvidaul sensitivity screen for each NSFW image : we actually have this already! via the spoiler image feature. the users go on to suggest allowing people to tag images themselves, so that certain images in the same post can be hidden but not others. to me, while having an option to say why the image is spoilered is nice, if someone tags it in the post what's the point of additional tags? —> within this thread they talk about having certain categories have different colors which is... kind of a shit idea for accessibility reasons from my understanding. we already have searchable tags, categorical tags and CWs highlighted differently too
- ease of posting for images comparable tumblr, capping of size is ok but also no uncontrollable compression and resizing : currently boba lets us post however big an image is so that's a non issue. that said, if boba wasn't anon first, i would suggest allowing users to be able to haver their iamges auto watermarked but not an issue here. would be cool if we could make tumblr or even lj era gif/icon sets rather than one image a line, can't format —> adding this here with this bullet because this doc has SHIT multi level bullets making it hard af to follow. but users also suggest stacked/slide show image option. that might be a helpful thread view but idk how well that works on mobile?
- easy, beautiful, and intuitive, no coding knowledge required : i'm assuming this is post formating? boba uses WYSIWYG which is great. would kinda like having the option to use that and/or html/bbcode/markdown (maybe even a combo? so much easier to make headings with markdown than with our text editor but that might just be me)
- and not being blocked from embedding them on other platforms : boba is the reverse, we have a lot of embedd options from other sources lmao.
- provide a reasonable amount of hosting space with an account, but for those who want to host more/larger files, give them an option to pay to upgrade their storage space : huh, okay that's an interesting thing. i'm not sure how boba is gonna handle this? at this point they talk about how to make it so people's content can't just be downloaded which is... another thing to tackle lmao
- full compatibility with the embed code from major streaming sitse : boba is actually easier to embed to than YT's main embed ability, same with twitter. just copy what you wanna link to and you're good to go
- ability to gift storage to another user : goddammit why can't they group this shit logically. currently a nonissue on boba since users have unlimited upload capabilities as seen by beeg luigi
- if video hosting is going to exist, in order to be useful for fanvidders, it needs to be fairly lax on copyright detection / either it needs to not have any detection algorithms at all and only remove user-reported full piracy, or, [let users tag shit, get ads and we CYA w/ copyright holders] : okay that's long af, truncated it a bit. boba doesn't have video uploads. i'm thinking we're gonna err on the side of no copyright algorithims though? in another bullet point, someone points out that vid content hosting and distribution is hella expensive, would require physical machines with big providers which means that they wouldn't be free of copyright detection or friendly to NSFW. “Vid hosting might be the feature req to sink this ship”
- the ability to create more customized pages that don't automatically have your blog theme applied : non issue since there's no blogs until we have private boards
- threaded comments on a post : we have that! now to make it not... be one letter at a time lmao. we even have the “skip to new comments” (just not via hotkey) although we need to make it more obvious when stuff is new —> within this bullet there was a req for LJ style threads which we kind have and no reddit style upvote/downvote sys. yes to like button, no to dislike button, have a like and bookmark button. someone suggested ravelry's list or emotive reacts. tbh i just really wanna “+1” button so i can show a poster i liked what they said but nothing to add to it lmao. this part got really long —> option to parent up is something we have
- reposting content with or without comment : moot point since it's threads. linking to threads within boba/embedding boba threads or comments will work in this case i assume. this section got long too, nearly 4pgs
- ability to make specific posts rebloggable/not rebloggable : moot point as they're threads. i guess in this case, embeddable or not embeddable?
- likes/kudos on posts : the next thing right under is “ability to show/hide likes” lmao. okay we talked about this too in the past. i enjoy kudos overs likes and the ability to opt out of seeing ANY kudos. again there were lots of sub bullets i ain't gonna deal with those
- pin a post to the top of your page : again moot point since you don't ahve your own “page” until we have private boards
- no auto-updating feed/toggle : HA WE HAVE THIS
- ability to queue psots so they post autoamtically a specific time : we do not have this. i'm not sure if we need this.
- ability to save and return to draft posts : “with auto-save”. lmao would like that. alternatively, ability to draft a post in one board and finally post it on another one (looking at write.as's ability lmao)
- “read more” option to limit size of long posts : most users rn are doing “hey this is op, check thread for the meat of it” but i kinda would like that. esp multiple read mores with custom text a la lj
- public follower count : not applicable to boba since we can't uh... well we can follow people once identity linking / deanoning becomes a thing but you can't see what your friends rae doing unless they let you
- mutual flag to see if a user you follow is also following you : see above
- receiving asks w/ option to anon : everything is an anon ask on boba and nothing hurts except for accidentally deleting shit i was about to post which is now no longer an issue!
- submissions : moot point since boba is forum style. when more personalized boards becomes a thing it will work similar to lj communities
- ability to turn off any kind of inbox feature, including any messaging system : from my understanding, we will have an optin message system?
- ability to hide number of notes on your posts : boba currently does the opposite of that. seeing as this was voted +2/-11 i think most people dislike this idea. had some related bullets “ability to hide # of notes on posts you're viewing” (not helpful on forum) and “no number of notes on any psots ever”
metadata & discovery
- ability to tag/categorize content : we have that! except our tags do nothing lmao. people suggested having both metadata and supplmentary tags. whispertags are kinda suppment tags. issue with metadata is that not everyone tags shit the same. this then brought up the idea of tag wrangling which is something i'm not enthused about in a social setting (how fanexus is planning is something i don't like rip. i'm also not happy with how ships get wrangled but that's a personal thing lmao). this section got fucking long too
- option to hide tags : boba cannot. i'm not sure if boba should. maybe make hide tags opt in?
- ability to search on multiple tags : we currently can't search at all but might be helpful. also allow you to use exclusions
- ability to search your own page for the tag as well as globally : not possible with boba rn. not sure if it would be feasible at all
- view and click thorugh all tags a user has used : we're anon, non issue
- ability to bulk edit tags : lmao on one hand yeah i wish, on the other, i kinda like “either erase everything you typed and redo or live with it”
- toggle ability to “read more”/view full list of tags over a certain length : maybe make whispertags a “click to view” option?
- ability to view all tags that have been added to a post : again we're a forum so not an issue but maybe a way to see other tags used within thread?
- common content warning tags beign able to be selected froma list and added : kinda doing that with + tags, although it makes me wonder if canonical CW tags would be better than the freeform ones we have now
- ability to 'save' a handful of tags you user most often for easy reference/addition to posts : not sure how feasible that would be or how useful. i guess if you only post about a certain kink or ship it can be?
- on tumblr there's an issue where tags become unbrowseable if they contain hyphens [and other characters] : hmm, not sure if that's an issue on our end since we can't search but that's something to keep in mind! they used obi-wan kenobi as an example of a tag that breaks due to hypen.
- tag search is viewable by 'most recent', 'popular in the last day'[/week, month, all time] : tag search isn't implemented yet, not sure if i like the distinctions although being able to search for tags you haven't seen vs ones you might have might be helpful. first thought was “since you last saerched” but :/
- tagviewer ability like xkit : from my understanding it lets you view posts that were tagged a certain way either oriignally or in a reblog. non issue since again, forum.
- “discovery” type page to see people outside of your feed if you want or a way to see friends of friends : hmm, not sure how this would work in boba. maybe a feed showing stuff you might like because someone you know commented or it has a tag you searched?
- blacklist : we do not have this but i would kinda like it for tags. mute/hide works well though and i think there was talks of being able to mute comment chains too in the future? commenters brought up whether it's better to block the term in post contents as well or just a tag and i'm leaning towards tag only. they also mention tumblr savior'ing it where it hides the post. would like, with something like “this post is hidden due to tag X, click to view”. would be nice to be able to click to view without un-hiding it from the page
- timestamps : we have relative timestamps. honestly would like to either toggle them or be able to click/mouse over to see when it was created
privacy and content controls
- blog visibility : we're all anone here. in the future boba will have community boards, maybe personal boards, etc that will have different levels. someone brought up how crap accessible only with a password is so maybe like password to join? invite only?
- levels of “mutuals” so you can grant access to people without actually having to follow them : hmm, i can't think of why soemone would de-anon to certain subset who aren't friends but shrug. i def remember talks of having different levels of how much someone can see
- privacy settings at all levels of posting : this is, again, something boba isn't dealing with because posts are essentially threads or replies to threads.
- mute conversation : on the timeline for boba afaik
- ability to show/hide who you follow : i'm assuming boba will never have the ability to show who you follow publicly?
- block/mute features that actually work : we have mute features that work great! plus the hide which, as mentioned in the past, would be great to put notes on
- public blogs should be visible to non-singed in users : so! personally i think certain boards should be invisble to people who aren't logged in (i.e., salt) but can be overridden with specific link to thread. and also maybe have users be able to flag “this thread can NOT be seen without logging in” (or hell, even otuside of this specific board)
- self identified nsfw toggles : looks like this has a huge additional section somewhere. currently boba assumes anything is nsfw which isn't a bad thing but not necessarily a good thing lmao. i'll probs have more to comment when i get to the big section on it
- good faith effort invested in user data privacy and security testing/gdpr etc compliance : huh i don't acutally know boba's user data privacy works cause we haven't written the user agreements and shit lmao. i'm assuming boba will track the absolute bare minimum to run the site?
- disallowing the posting of info that identifies where you live : uh huh. well boba was anon. this bullet was more for the internet safety that teens today don't have
- a way to denote your blog might have explict content and a way to opt out of seeing it : no blogs, just threads. again boba currenly runs on the assumption everything's nsfw. how would a nsfw off toggle work for us????
- ability to opt out of being tagged in a photo : we're anon, i think this is a non issue for us
integrations & export
- corssposting to/from other platforms : we crosspost via embedds but not IFTTT. not sure if we want it since, again, anon
- ability to exposrt personally authored or updated posts : would like an option but not sure how feasible. would you just get ranodm posts without context? full threads if you made one comment ever? only threads you're OP?
- RSS feeds : they suggested individual timeline or by tag. the ability to subscribe to a tag probably wouldn't be a bad idea
- googel analytics compatibility : think this is a non issue for us
- giphy compatibility : we have this!
- api w/ programmatic access to eveyrthing a user can see : this should get tossed up with accessibility issues that's being worked on
- full federation : this part brought up a lot of good points for and against federation. tbh wouldn't be mad if boba was open source but not federated so someone can make their own boba with their own rules and it's an entirely diffeent thing. but i also like hte idea of having my own slice of boba just for me and friends that can talk to all of boba
revenue & income (surviability)
- a sustaianable (not ad-based) revenue model : okay most definitely but the issue is how. general consesus on this is that basic functions are at no charge, but things like “extra services” (they list nae changes, extra sideblogs, premium layouts, avatars, reaction gifs, anything can be monitized).
- offset cost of individual users by charing a one time fee for brand/amrketing accounts : ...do we awnt marketing accounts even on boba????
- pay for indivdual feature packages : suggested on doc are ability to hotlink media files to other sites, upload gifs above N mb, change username, custom domains, multiple user icons, custom themes. write.as actually has certain things you can buy as a one time fee (such as download a whole blog as an ebook)
- ability to gift adde dservices or credit for future suer of services to other users : i kinda likes this idea other than we don't know what we wanna use pass the idea of boba perals
- if ads are inevitbale, a type of premium account that does not have ads : please no ads on boba unless it's like... boba ads or communty ads
- payment processor needs to be one thtat's okay with adult content on the service : preferably more than one but there's so few processors. commiss.io ues stripe
- process for flagging ads for content that itself violates the tos or is otherwise problematic (funds bigoted causes, etc) : still say no to ads. someone keeps pointing out ravelry and idk what it is bc when i search it it shows up as a social media site for knitters??? someone suggested fandom revival of classified ads (i.e., need con roommate, selling merch, etc)
- some sort o fmonthly donation opportunity with special membershp rewards : ...yes donate to boba, get thomas the tank engine ahegao stickers
- kickstarter : cant cause adult content. there used to be a sex positivie version of ks but i think its dead
- site-themed merch and swag for sale? : might be an option down the road. someone suggested a redbubble type option for artists to sell art/stuff and part of th ecut to the site
TOS, Moderation, Abuse Team(s)
- tos that clearly outliens what is and is not allowed : something that is being worked on for boba. users suggest a clear policy of what will happen if you break the rules, including different levels of infraction and escaltions, ability to flag comments additions and not the OP itself, no automated bans, have a human readable TOS
- an abuse team : possibly a thing to be had down the road. users suggested metafilter model – paid modrators workign in shifts for worldwide coverage. also noted that if AV is allowed, abuse team would be neded to go through uploaded content to make sure shit such as acutal CESM isn't uploaded. issues that arise is that fair use clauses are different, what users can view is different based oon region, etc
- *detailed reporting sytem: fields for flagging specific TOS violations such as spam, bots, *ism, phobia, harassment, extremely violent content, animalabuse, doxxing, scripting, hacks, plagiarism : okay again, issues that will be figured out once boba has tos
- for anti-style harassment campaigns [...] an “I'm being harassed/bombared” button [that flags/logs msgs for review by staff] – so reall hoping fanexus has looked into this doc because that's something they really fucking need to have. not so much of an issue becasue, anon.
- [punishing people who falsely report] : would be down for but still need to figure out how reporting would work
- [there was a lot more on tagging and flagging but i think they were sublists of abuse team so i gave up]
groups and communities
- commmunities : this is something boba has planned. things that are listed in doc, coms have perosnal moderators ala reddit mods, have chrono timelines in addidiotn to tag/individual
- communtiies can be set to public or private (members-only) : this was planned. also suggested protected (can view but can't post)
- moderated posting access and moderated posting options : handled by “post as” ability
- rules: owner, moderator, member, visitor (optional) : presumably when boba coms/boards become a thing, that csn e handled by person who creates it? this also brings up the ability for “only certain user types can make OP or this type of post”
- enable opt-in anon comments at hte communiyt level : moot point, we're opt out of anon lmao
other / awaiting categorization
- ability to recommend a post : moot pioint since it's not a blog
- defined access filters similar to LJ/DW (blacklist might solve this issue) : this is more “who can see when i post and what am i shown as”
- i don't know if this has been mentioned but i acutally like the ability to reblog a post form just the op or only up to a certain comment on tumblr : we don't have reblog capabilities and i'm assuming if we embed a boba post it would be that specific post
- Private messaing/IM? : i know this was mentioned for boba but figuring out how to maintian that an d anon was still up in the air esp since you're managing so many identities. someone suggests letting it work on third party chat clients. people bring up also how to report in DMs, what gets saved adn archived, etc
- direct chatting in realtime? : peronally i like async chatting (which is why i love threads).
- tip jar integration for both other users and for site admin/costs/etc : would love a boba tip jar (bobajar?). user brings up tipping site currency a la dw and reddit (is this eggplant?)
- a tag/flag for fundraising posts : huh, did not consider, not sure if that's something someone on boba would post about but having that as a category (say in matrix? outerweb?) or maybe a board for coms and fundraising?
- custom views a la lj/dw reading list : moot point since we don't even have a tiemline, also mitigated by the fact that it's boards
- pinboard compatibility : i'm assuming this is pinboard.in? not sure if that's something people would want automatically to have places you post on boba shown up in your pins
- ability to link to your profiles on other sites : could be useful even though it might be hidden / used only to connect. as an aside, maybe when we have the option to de-anon posts, users have their own profile that shows a list of pblicly de-anoned posts? for example, i don't mind people knowing my twitter, ao3, and that i'm the author of the thread about making a ttrpg, but i wouldn't say, deanon on my threads for !wishlist
- ability to seach people' s profile info : mood point since we odn't have profiles, this one looks like a way to see who has coms open, who allows translations, etc
- group blogs : this sounds like coms / private/group boards
- away to mark posts read so you can keep track of where you are on your reading list [...] a “read later' section whre you could star certain posts that you could come back to later? : we have mark as red, the ability to bookmark to read later we odn't have yet. not sure if needed, might be nice
- multiple icons : not sure if needed. might be important when we can “comment as X”
- ability to turn off seeing crosspsots : we don't have crossposts, we have embeds up the kazzoo
- ability to add a note to smeone else's blog that only you can view : something i suggested on fanexus. moot on boba until we can de-anon. still think this will be helpful for hide feature
- non compressed images and gifs : this was already mentioned in this doc???? right now we have no limits afaik. someone did mention “one click access to full view”. not sure if we have that cause i've never needed it. oh god this whole section is legit a rehash of the orig section on image issues. the only new thing i see is allowing thumbnails / crops by OP
- no cropped images and gifs : we currenly crop nothing
- a personal bookmarking/ling function that does not add any notes to tne notes count : we don't have a like function, would like to have a boba pinboard where i can keep threads or comments i like and wanna go back to... like twitter's bookmark system but actually functional!
- ability to earch entire blog either by tag or keyword : we odn't have blogs. we have search on the way probably. this is mostly so you can theoretically find content YOU generated with tags based on the comments.
- *chapter posts. some kind of simpel and easy way to link psots together as a unit/book/series for art and written stuff. not tags. no hunting down the last chapte f something in ebtween a billion othe rposts of kittens* : boba does this with the timeline / gallery view.
- still functional when javascript is disabled : i have 0 idea if boba is. huh.
- moddable communities. communities with mods with option for private or public membership. or some kind of communal space where multiple conversations can happen at once and not be on top of each other : we have that once group boards are a thing.
- per-post creative commons licensing options : not sure how boba wil handle CC. isn't CC like... being pushed back for some reason?
- busienss/corporate transparency: site admins let people know when thre's problems and what they're pllanning to do to fix them : we have this currently. users suggest a known bugs list somewhere public, no secret testing featurs, etc. boba does this with !bobaland
- [...] fannish next of kin (a la ao3) : if you die/have no access, only the people who you're deanon know you're gone. not an issue i think for boba?
- another potential income stream[...]self-publishing site that allowed original fic authors to tag their books like ao3 writers can tag their fiction[...]automtically turns designated posts[///] into dwonloads in several formats [....]like an itch.ip payment model, that allows people to offer downloads free, pas-as-you-will, or for a set price : whoever suggested it is a wordy mofo. as mentioned, write-as created this functionality with a one time fee. i don't think this is a feature usable for boba
- This isn’t a top priority but to be completely fair, what keeps me on tumblr vs dw/lj/et al is the dashboard layout. Personal blogs aside, the dashboard is simple, clean, and doesn’t overload me sensory wise. : hmm, wehn we have more feed options this might be a good idea
- multiple font sizes without having to zoom in the eintire blog/dashboard : i've only ever zoomed on boba by acicdent on my phone, not sure how boba works in this funcionality
- [someone posts about pillowfort having a lot of shit people say we like] why not work iwth them instead of setting p a competitor and further fragmenting fandom? : because pf is overrun by antis and anti-sw fucks
- [very long part that pairs down to this point:]I’m thinking of a post by @greywash on tumblr that says “I’m saying: there is a systemic problem within fandom, regarding the fact that we routinely get hit on three fronts: legal rights to the material we transform, sexual content, and governmental disapproval. Protecting fandom means fighting for fandom on all three fronts and putting thought and effort into how to make an archive robust against all three prongs of the attack.” How do we build in those protections in a for-profit endeavor? Can we have a section where we attempt to hash out this theory? : i would say we now have a new front – conserverqueer tweens who refuse to learn fannish history. this is a good point and i think boba has gotten it really down pat by expressing who the site is for and hat it for and not tyring to fix all the ills of fanodm by overpromising
- When making a new post, have basic things like tags and whatever text/photos/vids you’re posting be easily accessible (i’m not wording this right, but think like how Tumblr sets up it’s new post page), but have things like warnings/privacy options/automatic orphaning/more specific post settings be in a collapsable menu to facilitate easier posting à la Tumblr/Twitter while having more AO3-like options without having them clutter up the entire page. : boba's post editor actually seems p clear cut to me
- ability to organize likes (a la memories on lj) : or organize bookmarks, somethign to think about
- [...]closed captioning or transcripts on any videos? : we don't have videos but ti's a good thing to consider if we do
COMPLEX ISSUES / BRAINSTORMING
flagging & tagging of adult, sexual, and nsfw content
- [porn vs nsfw {not porn) vs no nsfw or porn] : we kinda have that function with different boards for different content but there's plenty f overlap. i guess maybe a flag for if a post is porn, nsfw, both, neither? is that a thing peopple would go for?
- all blogs can follow othe rblogs, but nsfw content seeing is a seperate function : we don't have blogs, moot point for boba
disincentives and limitations fo rpeople flagging as violations the wrong things with malice (like flagging for pedophilia when it's about aship they don't like and it's a simpel age gap between adults etc) : this goes along with people gettign in trouble for abusing reports also i love how in the comments someone shut down someone who started pushing fanpol rhetoic
pros and cons of “reblogging” and nested conversations
should reblogging be a feature? how to follow conversations and discussions on a post in a coherent way? : moot point for boba since it's threads and forums, you can't “shre” outside of the board unless you link it yoruself
single central identity; tiered prtections
oh god okay this is jsut a mess. my thoughts here! i guess the initial idea is that you have to verify your person when making a “central identity” account and once verified, you can make additional accounts to help excluse bots, etc.
someone suggested “sensitve users” (those at risk, SW< trans, suffering DV, etc) can have an alt verification path w/ diffrent and stronger protections, which automatically raised flags and eyebrows with both me and other usrs. “all users should get hte strongest privacy protections or it should jsut be anon”, “forcing people to admit their identiy/struglges for stronger protections is asking for gatekeeping”
somehow 2 factor authentication is lumped into this???? but yeah no legal identiy should never be linked on boba wtf
phone number verifiation with ability to make multiple (indefinite?) main accounts from one phone number : wow that got a -9 lmao. people rightly pointed otu that not everyone has a gd phone
should image descriptions (“alt-text”) be required or strong encourged?
anothe rlong rambly section. boba doesn't have alt-txt atm and, like with tags, i think it should be cnouraged but not forced. make it easy, when you upload a picture it take syou straight away to where you can add alt txt as away of interface encouraging it.
someone pointed out there are douchebags who intentionally put something misleading in img descriptions. i'm not sure what the line is between image descriptions and alt text (some of the writers make it sound like they're two very different things) but i'm p sure labeling a picture of someth NSFW with something that says SFW is probably a dick move an dshould be discouraged
orphaning posts & entiring blogs
so rn boba doesn't hav ethis function. i'm not sure if boba nees this function since it's anon.
how would it work? if you orphan your account, all posts stay up. maybe anything that was posted as de-anon goes back to anon. what if you delete your account? same hting? or are all your posts gone?
tags as metadata vs whisperspace
oh god this section was just shy of two pages
boba actually does this really well, with the heirachy of tags, categories, CWs then whisper. good job.
i'm like 80% certain this is the same exact posts from the top of the doc fml
mobile app vs responsive design
this was one page. tldr; responsive design is better becaseu apps for apple cannot be nsfw
boba does mobile site well overall
wouldn't suggest SMS notifs, but maybe email or push notifs?
age requirements or restrictions
this part was 7 pages lmao
and colorful
boba nips this in the bud by being 18+
issue (maybe i don't notice it cause i'm logged in) there's nothing that requires users to click to say “yes i'm 18, i understand i'm using this site at my own discretion” alhtough this could be because we dont have a tos yet. ...we should probs do that before boba hits beta
allowing alts while preventing bots
migtht be moot for boba since everyhting i sanon. this section was interesting because it legit had “if your account is under X days old, you can't message anyone unelss theyr'e as new as you are” which would probs help with sockpuppeting harassment campaigns
legalities
this section might be a good one to read if only because differeent places, different laws. also has some good notes about DMCA takedowns. volunteer content moderators.
what's in the TOS?
oh boy thi si sgonn abe good
boba doesnt have a TOS, although as mentioned, making the TOS human readable (or at least have sections to explain what th elegalese means) would be best
there's two links in this section re: DW's TOS on porn and on nazis. tl;dr, everything is good to go unless it's inherently illegal under US law or spam, and DW doesn't allow people inciting harassment, harassing others
“no hate speech, if they proselytise or harass people, they're banned”
somoene considered making certain dogwhistle tags unsearchable but was pointed out that they'll either use another tag to group and by banning certain tags you make it harder for people to talk about their exp getting attacked
No hate speech, no harassment, no deliberate attempts to ruin the website experience for other users. They can believe whatever they like, and talk to their friends about it – they can't invade threads where they're not welcome.
ah more people saying they agree with antis
Being personally creeped out by fictional content doesn’t constitute a solid enough reason to implement a notation in terms of service. ToS guidelines exist as CYA for the platform itself, not as a moral document. The idea is to keep the site out of legal trouble and make it functional for its users.
someone explaining the slippery slope of banning certain content leading to more bans is the reason why ao3 exists as it is in the first place
Users should be able to opt out of showing up in google serch results : perosnally, i think boba's boards shouldn't show up on google search at all
question of who owns the posted content? boba is weird in the case that everything is anon unless you de-anon. presumably, tos would have the basic “by posting you give us permission to use yoru content and let it be seen but youown it”
user comments that while TOS input from com is nice, lawyers will be neede dlmao
logging and backups
What do we log? How long do we keep logs? Has implications for legality, privacy, and debugging What do we back up, same questions Basically, how long does deleted data “last” after creation? : all really good questions boba has 0 answers for afaik. i do know rn everything is saved but there as talk on some boards, such as salt, not be
on the question of organizational/platform resilience
oh god this person had a lot to say
good things to say
this actually brings up the reason why boba was planned to be open source / federated, so that if something happens, other instances can survive without main boba
centralizd platforms are easier to manage and secure, but by putting all the eggs in one basket runs the risk of DDOS'ed, warrantied, bought out, etc
decentralized protocols seem to have problems with keeping userbases safe. they might also be harder to archive
off-site notifications
i think it's essentialyl “hey here's a mail or push saying someone commented on the thing or you got the thing”. currently boba doesn't do that.
there was 6 pages of peopel talking to teach other via the gdoc tehn 3 pages about making a testing plan anda another 3 pages of various users typing out the lyrics to bohemian rhpasody and othe rsongs
