Conan smiles through his well wishers, glad that his birthday fell on only a half day of classes. He has plans as soon as Teitan Middle School let's out, plans that wouldn't be ruined by friends, or corpses or anything like that. Conan hoped at least. KID had said he was going to "Gift him some luck", as if there was such a thing (but since he last saw the thief on Wednesday, he hadn't fallen into a murder or any crime more dangerous than an attemptive purse snatching that was handled easily enough).

Still as soon as the final bell rang, Conan waves off his friends (and they are friends, even if Conan hadn't really planned to make them in the beginning), sends Ran and Mouri-jiisan a text, and makes his way home.

Well, the manor. Subaru's home, now, it hadn't been his for years at this point. He doesn't bother with the front door and instead opts to use one of ther many secret entrances his parents installed during construction. This one leads to the study and Conan picks up his sneakers, leaving them at the door. The sound of cooking stops and the strawberry blonde pops his head out of the kitchen.

The man gives an enigmatic smile but doesn't say a word past the customary "welcome home," finishing up his meal prep in companionable silence as Conan watches from the island. They could eat but, Conan admits shyly, there's something more he wants. Instead the two head upstairs.

Later, Subaru's runs calloused hands across milky flesh, laving attention against thin and puckered scars, telling tales of daring rescues and near misses. Small hands, but getting bigger by the year, run against Subaru's own body, but takes great care to keep his fingers away from the face.

It's affection of a sort, for two men who hide in plain sight, who lie and cheat to chase away the darkness. Maybe it's love but, for just a moment, they can forget the rest of their worries. Just a moment.
