At a young age, Midoriya Izuku learns that not all people are created equal. Some people have wonderful quirks like Kacchan. Or are pretty like Mouri-san or can do lots of wonderful things. But there's also people who are mean and not nice. That there are people who are hurt for no reason at all.

Izuku learns all this, sitting in the doctor's office as a grandfatherly man shatters his dreams, Momma putting on a brave face even as her eyes look glossy with tears. They leave, taking the bus instead of walking like they did on their way, with Momma helping him do tricks on the low walls.

They get home and Izuku asks for computer time but he's finally crying now and Momma is crying too.

"C-can I still be a hero?"

He feels Momma's tears soak his shirt. "I'm so sorry Izuku, if it wasn't for my family you would have a quirk - I promise you can do whatever you put your mind to, no matter what. I'll make sure of it."

That promise gets Izuku through early morning training sessions and crazy schemes for years to come.

Midoriya Izuku is a plain kid, a bit mumbly, a tad clumsy, but rather forgettable while works for him. He doesn't really have friends, although his classmates tolerate him well enough, except for Kacchan. Kacchan is his best friend in the whole world even though the blond ignores him during class and is only nice when they're alone. That's fine. Izuku can deal with that. What he can't deal with is the way his heart sometimes pounds when Kacchan walks into the classroom, how his face heats up and he's stuttering more than usual when one of their teachers put them together in a group. He can't deal with sometimes doodling little hearts around his name whenever Izuku takes notes on his quirk and his habits and he /especially/ can't deal with one of the boys who hangs around Kacchan grabs his notebook while he was cleaning up and starts paging through it.

"Hero Analysis for the Future? For a quirkless dweeb like you? Ha." And then he gets to the page where Izuku drew all the hearts. "He's got a crush!"

BKG takes the notebook, a furrow between his eyes. Then he looks up and stares at him, "sorry Deku, you're not my type."

The extras laugh but all Izuku can see is the glimmer in BKG's eye as he turns away, tossing the notebook back at Izuku. The others thought Kacchan was making fun of him, but there was none of the malice in his words, just a statement of fact.

Still, with a broken heart and wounded pride, Deku heads home... And ends up under that blasted bridge. Deku isn't helpless, but knowing how to escape ropes or pick locks doesn't very little against a villain made of slime. Something in him is telling him to use magic, but he doesn't know any so what's the point, he's going to die and-

"I AM HERE!"

This is how he meets All Might.

Things go as cannon - Izuku latches on, asks a question and gets rejected. Kacchan gets captured, Izuku rushes to save him regardless of the odds, AM saves the both of them & tells Izuku that he was wrong, that Izuku has all the qualities he looks for in a hero.

Then he gets home and is freaked the fuck out when he checks the mirror and sees purple-red eyes staring back at him.

"Yo, my tamer."

Izuku screams.

It takes Inko hours to explain what's going on, the curse her family has and hoped would break with taking on her husband's name. Obviously that didn't work.

She introduces Izuku to Wiz, to the Niwa legacy, and to the fact that he's expected to steal priceless artifacts from museumes.

"...that's not hero like behavior."

"Would letting the artwork wake up and cause civilians harm be more heroic?"

"...okay fine I guess I'll go to hero school and be a vigilante."

Inko at least gives him a week to get used to sharing his body and transforming etc.

Combine that with training with All Might and Izuku is stupidly tired all the time. The conversation with Kacchan where the blonde is "not" thankful for the save is draining too.

It's been 40yrs since Kaitou Dark has been seen in Japan and the thief starts his new reign with a bang. Heroes are kind of new to him - they weren't as plentiful during Inko's dad's tenure as Dark - but it brings a unique and fun challenge to his heists. He's seen them through Izuku's eyes but he has his own thoughts on them.

Ingenium has been a joy to play w/, quick to joke, and Dark thinks that man is his favorite. All Might is pretty cool and he's seen a handful of other ones at heists but every time he sees Endeavor, glowering at him, he feels that the man's hate of him is something more personal than being a "villain" in need to be captured.

(Dark /is not/ a villian tyvm. He's actually assisted Ingenium take down real ones at Izuku's urging and that was an interesting rush he equates with high stakes heists. He can see why Izuku wants to be a hero so damn badly)

So yeah, Izuku trains and steals and is a tired but hella sated boy because he's doing good all the time even if no one knows he is.

He finally cleans up the beach the day of the exam and AM gives him his quirk (which he does tell his mom about because the only reason why he's Dark is because he's quirkless and he rather not freak her out too by being a "late bloomer")

The exam goes about the same except Deku gets to hear Dark's snide commentary and then "WHAT THE FUCK YOUR BROKENOUR LEGS AND ARM OH SHIT OKAY LEMME TEACH YOU HOW TO SUMMON WINGS, IT WILL HURT BUT WE WONT DIE"

Uraraka saves them though so that's good (Dark falls a little in love with her for the save haha).

Deku is still hella depressed by how poorly he thinks he did but he decides "I def passed the gen ed exam so I can get into heroics later!"

Dark and Izuku work on getting OFA under control. Between the two of them they figure out how better to moderate the quirk so he can use full cowl but at less than 5%. It's just a very small enhancement but it helps a lot in picking Deku's up and helping Dark stay ahead of the heroes.

And then he finds out about rescue points and all is good.

Quirk Assessment goes well. Izuku tries to tell BKG how he had a quirk but Kacchan is being halfway nice and says he thinks he knows how Deku was able to fool UA into thinking he has one which leaves the boy adorably confused and Dark worried.

Esp since BKG makes Deku go DOKIDOKI

Now... that's the start of the Niwa family in this AU. How about them Hikaris? (Response pending for when I write it up) (Also if anyone else wants to chime in feel free. DNAngel made me so many friends as a kid)

Let's backtrack about some years.

Todoroki Enji marries Hikari Rei despite his parents muttering behind their hands.

She's an artist, they tell him. Her father died under mysterious circumstances when she was young and her mother has passed not long after leaving Rei in the hands of a distant relative. Enji really didn't care - he got along with her rather well /and/ she had a quirk that would guarantee strong progeny with the perfect balance of their quirks.

Who cares about what his parents said!

When Enji asks Rei to marry him, she hesitates though. It makes Enji think that maybe their friendship and easy camaraderie wasn't reciprocated, but then Rei tells him about the Hikari family and their sordid relationship with magic artworks, mental instability, and cursed alteregoes.

She expects him to run. He doesn't

Enji: "So what?"

Rei: "any child I give you could harbor a psychopath?"

Enji: "isn't that what children are anyways? We can teach it out of them."

Rei is utterly unconvinced that you can "teach" Krad any compassion but she is charmed and agrees to get married.

It goes well until she gets pregnant and there are complications. She's worried the whole time and then first few years of Touya's life up until he shows signs of his quirk.

Rei is so stupidly relieved that she is very gungho about having the next one. And she's a girl so there's no worries there even if she ends up quirkless (Fuyumi isn't though and Rei delights in seeing her ice even though when her daughter turns too quickly Re flinches, drowning in memories of Krad).

The same with Natsuo and Shouto.

Rei loves her children... she just wished that they looked more like Enji, had his dark hair and darker eyes and bolder features, not the slim daintiness and moonlight coloring of the Hikari's, not those gray eyes that Rei sometimes think are filled with malice.

She knows her children, and while Touya might have inherited Enji's temper he certainly doesn't have the same malicious intent that Krad has (right?) Obviously by marrying out she was able to break the curse, able to stop the chains of destiny.

She's Doing All Right. (That's what she tells herself, even when her mind is tied up in knots, looking for problems that aren't there)

And then Rei mistakes Shouto for Krad entirely, pours a boiling pot of water on her son's face and it's only after Enji grabs her by her arms and starts screaming for Fuyumi and Touya to check on their little brother.

Enji is furious at Rei but he's also worried and there is /a lot/ of yelling in the parents wing even as Touya and Fuyumi and Natsuo sit outside of the room Enji's doctor has commandeered to treat Shouto.

They're even more worried when things get quiet. Yells are bad but the silence is worst.

"I can't be around the kids what if I hurt them worse! Oh God what if Shouto cant see because of me."

"Rei, running away is-"

"For everyone's good!"

The fight goes on for hours until Rei point blankly says that if Enji wont check her into a mental ward, shell do it herself.

Rei packs her own bags and Enji drives her to the hospital in the morning. He hasn't slept, kept going between his kids' rooms to check on them and trying to talk Rei out of it but she's not budging.

Once she's admitted she requests that none of the kids see her until she feels she's more fit.

Enji is unwilling to fight more and leaves. But the moment he enters the house hes faced with 7 eyes (The dr said Shouto will be /fine/ he has to believe it) and he...

Falters.

What can he tell the kids for them to understand? That their mother had a psychotic break and she removed herself to prevent her from hurting anyone else? That she loves them but every time she sees them she sees her warped family circumstances?

No, when they realized that all their kids had quirks, he and Rei decided to not tell them about the Hikaris or magic or anything else, even if Dark and the Niwas pop up again.

But now he's stuck explaining to 4 kids why their mother won't be around anymore. And Enji, honestly, is not the best person for this - it's why he has a PR team dammit.

So instead of a heart to heart, he just firmly says "Your mother will not be around for a while. We will... work around her absence."

And then making sure they were all physically okay, Enji walks away to get ready for work.

(The man cares but he's just shit ar showing it. This bites him in the ass because Touya runs away soon after and pretty much all his kids hate him for the misbegotten belief that he drove Rei away and he's unwilling to tell them the truth)

So that's the Hikaris - they married into the Todoroki fam. Enji is still obsessed but hes also wary because seeing his wife crack makes him want to keep his kids out of the arts and close so they don't have the same issues... by giving them other issues because he's just not all that great at parenting because he isnt sure how much discipline or free range is good. Hes trying though and that's a small theme in wings
